Bridal Alterations in Oakbrook Terrace
In-House Wedding Dress Tailoring
A wedding dress is only as beautiful as the way it moves on the bride wearing it. At Lily Bridal and More in Oakbrook Terrace, every bridal alteration is performed in-house by our own seamstresses—no outsourcing, no rotating tailors, no guesswork. From the first fitting to the final bustle, the same skilled hands shape your gown to fit exactly the way it should.
Whether you purchased a designer gown from our boutique or brought one in from another shop, our in-house bridal alterations services transform a beautiful dress into your dress. Hems, sleeves, bodice adjustments, bustles, beading repair, and full custom modifications are all handled on-site at our Oakbrook Terrace studio.
Why In-House Bridal Alterations Matter
Many bridal boutiques sell the gown and send brides elsewhere for alterations. We don't. Keeping every fitting and stitch inside our Oakbrook Terrace studio means we know each designer's fabrics, construction, and beadwork intimately—and we're accountable to you from the moment you say yes to the dress until the day you walk down the aisle.
Our in-house bridal alteration services are designed around three principles:
- One team from start to finish. The seamstress who pins your first fitting is the same one who completes your final pressing.
- Designer-level fabric expertise. Working daily with gowns from Lili Pellegrino, Nava Bride, Saiid Kobeisy, Moonlight, Val Stefani, and Adornato Couture means we understand silk, tulle, lace, mikado, and heavily beaded fabrics from the inside out.
- Saturday-by-appointment scheduling. Alteration fittings are reserved on Saturdays by prior appointment, giving each bride a quiet, dedicated time slot rather than a rushed slot between weekend walk-ins.
Bridal Alteration Services We Offer
Every gown arrives with its own challenges. Some need a hem and a bustle. Others need a full reconstruction of the bodice, custom sleeves added, or a neckline reshaped. Our in-house alteration services cover the full range of bridal tailoring needs:
Wedding Gown Alterations
- Hem shortening and lengthening across silk, tulle, lace, satin, and mikado
- Bodice taking-in and letting-out for a precise fit through the waist, hips, and bust
- Bustle creation — French, American, Austrian, and ballroom-style bustles built to match your train and fabric
- Strap adjustments, sleeve shortening, and sleeve removal
- Neckline reshaping and modesty panel additions
- Lining replacements and adjustments for comfort and movement
- Beadwork and lace repair, with hand-replaced detailing where needed
Custom Bridal Modifications
- Adding sleeves, straps, or sheer cap sleeves to a strapless or sleeveless gown
- Changing a neckline — V-neck, square, sweetheart, bateau, or illusion
- Building a detachable overskirt, capelet, or jacket for a two-look wedding day
- Reworking a gown to fit a heritage or cultural ceremony requirement
Custom Bridal Tailoring and Fashion Design
Lily Bridal is, at its core, a designer house as well as a boutique. That means our in-house atelier doesn't stop at altering what you bought — we can also design what you couldn't find. If a bride loves a designer silhouette but wants a heritage neckline, a different sleeve, or a fabric the original designer never offered, our team can build it.
Custom bridal tailoring at Lily Bridal includes full-design consultations, fabric sourcing, pattern construction, and hand-finishing. Brides who want a truly one-of-one gown — or who want their mother's dress reworked into something contemporary — start the conversation with a custom design appointment.
Your Bridal Alteration Timeline
The single biggest favor a bride can do herself is start alterations early. Industry production delays mean most gowns arrive at our boutique within four to six months of order — but alterations themselves should begin once your final body measurements are stable, ideally eight to twelve weeks before the wedding date.
A typical bridal alterations timeline at Lily Bridal looks like this:
First Fitting
8 to 12 Weeks Out
Bring the shoes you'll wear on your wedding day, the undergarments you plan to wear under your gown, and a hair clip or pinup of your wedding-day hairstyle if possible. We pin the gown to your exact measurements and map out every alteration that needs to happen.
Second Fitting
4 to 6 Weeks Out
Major alterations have been completed and the gown is fitted to your body. We check the bustle, hemline, bodice fit, and any custom modifications. Small refinements are noted for the final fitting.
Final Fitting
1 to 2 Weeks Out
Last details are perfected: final pressing, bustle practice with your maid of honor or mother if they'll be handling it on the wedding day, and the moment your gown is officially ready to take home.
Brides who need a faster turnaround can be accommodated when our schedule allows — call us directly to discuss timing.

Bridal Alterations FAQ
When should I start my wedding dress alterations?
Begin alterations 8 to 12 weeks before your wedding date, once your final body measurements are stable. Most brides need two to three fittings, and giving your seamstress enough lead time prevents last-minute rushes on detailed work like beading repair, custom modifications, and intricate bustles.
Do you alter wedding dresses purchased elsewhere?
Yes. While our seamstresses are most familiar with the designer collections we carry, we welcome gowns purchased from other boutiques and online sellers. Bring your dress to a consultation at our Oakbrook Terrace studio and we'll review what's possible and provide a clear estimate before any work begins.
How many fittings will I need?
Most brides need two to three fittings: an initial fitting to pin and measure, a second fitting to check the work, and a final fitting one to two weeks before the wedding for last refinements and a bustle walkthrough. Heavily customized gowns or major modifications may require additional fittings.
What is a bustle and do I need one?
A bustle gathers and secures the train of your gown after the ceremony so you can walk, dance, and move freely at the reception. There are several styles — French (under-bustle), American (over-bustle), Austrian (drawstring), and ballroom — and the right choice depends on your gown's silhouette, fabric weight, and train length. We design every bustle in-house to match the dress.
What should I bring to my first fitting?
Bring the shoes you plan to wear on your wedding day, the undergarments you'll wear under your gown (including any shapewear), and ideally a hair clip or accessory if your hairstyle will change your overall height or posture. These details directly affect hem length, bodice fit, and how the gown sits on your frame.
Can a wedding dress be altered to a smaller size?
Most gowns can be taken in one to two dress sizes without compromising the design. Larger reductions are possible but become more complex when working with seamed beading, lace appliqués, or boned bodices. During your consultation, we'll review the gown's construction and explain exactly what's achievable for your specific dress.
Do you handle custom bridal design, not just alterations?
Yes. Lily Bridal operates as both a designer house and a boutique, so our in-house team can take on full custom bridal design — building a gown from concept to finished dress — as well as significant modifications to existing gowns (adding sleeves, changing necklines, building overskirts). Book a custom consultation to discuss your vision.
When are alteration appointments available?
Bridal alteration fittings are scheduled on Saturdays by prior appointment. This reserved scheduling ensures every bride receives quiet, focused time with her seamstress. Call (331) 979-7153 or book online to reserve your fitting.
